THE 58TH ANNUAL CAS AWARDS CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY 9 HISTORY OF THE CAS AWARDS The Cinema Audio Society had its start in 1964, but it wasn't until 1971 that the CAS presented its first award. It was called the Man of the Year Award and was presented to Gordon Sawyer. Founding member Murray Spivack received the second award. After that, there were several years when few or no awards were presented. In 1986, the CAS began presenting plaques to the Emmy winners and Oscar nominees. We also presented the first CAS Life Achievement Awards to "Tex" Rudloff and Carroll Pratt. In 1994, the Cinema Audio Society unveiled its own awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for Motion Pictures and Television. After 30 years, the establishment of our own CAS Awards, given to sound mixers by their peers, became a reality. Over the years, the CAS Awards have evolved and expanded. The presentation now includes seven categories to celebrate excellence in sound mixing: Motion Pictures – Live Action; Motion Pictures – Animated; Motion Pictures – Documentary; Non-Theatrical Motion Pictures or Limited Series; Television Series – One Hour; Television Series – Half-Hour; and Television Non-Fiction, Variety or Music – Series or Specials. In 2006, the CAS redesigned and renamed the CAS Lifetime Achievement Award to the CAS Career Achievement Award. This same year, the CAS presented its first Filmmaker Award, now in its 17th year. Another expansion was the presentation of the CAS Technical Achievement Awards, which has now been renamed the Outstanding Product Awards. This award was first given in 2005 to honor technical innovation in sound recording and to recognize manufacturers of production and post-production products. The CAS presented its first Student Recognition Award in 2016. Now in its 8th year, this award affords the membership the opportunity to introduce and herald exceptional new talent to our craft and industry. Special honors have been given over the years to show our appreciation of exceptional contributions to our society and industry. In 2018, the Edward J. Greene Award for the Advancement of Sound was established in honor of the former CAS Career Achievement Award honoree. Additionally, there have been President's Awards and Board Recognition Honors. As we prepare for this year's awards, we can see what a long way we have come, and it is with great pride that we celebrate the CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing. It has become an award highly esteemed by mixers as it is truly a recognition by their peers—an award of, by, and for the sound mixer. BY HISTORIAN JAMES A.
