3 5 (bringing his nominations' total to eight), for Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest and the epic film Ben-Hur. At the 32nd Academy Awards ceremony, he won his second posthumous Academy Award for Best Art Direction for Ben-Hur. Bill met the "love of his life" while attending UC Berkeley, Esther Montgomery Horning. He and Esther raised three sons: William Jr., Thomas, and Robert. All three boys loved building and designing things and grew up to become engineers of some sort. Bill, Esther, and their youngest son Thomas lived and traveled throughout Italy for several years during the filming of Ben-Hur, an experience that the family thoroughly embraced and enjoyed. He passed away in 1959 from cancer at the young age of 54. At the time of his passing, he was survived by Esther, his three sons, and many grandchildren.
