In 2011, I was approached to bid on a mural for Fox Studios. I did not win the job, but the meeting went so well that they oered another ob. hey asked me to restore the historical commissary mural painted in '30s or '40s by Scenic Artists on the lot. The mural is a depiction of countries at the time. During WWII, they removed the countries Germany, Japan and Italy from the mural. Originally painted with the mixed dry color and glue painted on linen cloth, then glued onto the wall, the mural was delicate and easily chipped. The mural had to be painted in oils over the varnished walls. I called Chris Coakley a fellow Scenic Artist and old friend), and he agreed to help, and we spent three weeks restoring this mural. All the work was done at night, after the commissary was closed. The studio was so pleased with the care that we took and the finished product that I was awarded a mural to be painted on Stage 5. The original stage that Mel Brooks used for Young Frankenstein. The mural was part of a renaming of the street to Mel Brooks Avenue as a thank you to the many years he produced films with Fox. his time, Chris was not T i m e t o P a s s t h e T o r c h F O X S T U D I O M U R A L S B Y M I C H A E L D E N E R I N G , S C E N I C A R T I S T A.
