Tail o' the Cock Paul described the Tail o' the Cock restaurant as the communal watering hole of the Valley, where families, local women's club meetings and celebrities would all intermingle under one roof. Paul used this location in Magnolia, but it seemed like a challenge we could not a ord to undertake in its current, defunct state. Massive windows look onto the golf course, which did not work for the dark, warm and intimate interior we wanted to create. I designed new wood-paneled walls with heavy decorative molding to cover the existing windows, adding smaller stained-glass windows throughout. Construction coordinator Anthony Syracuse's team of propmakers were able to build on site at the location, which helped tremendously with time and budget. Over 5,000-square feet of carpet was rolled out. I found an artisan in Southern California that was able to make twenty-four custom stainedglass windows in a specifi c way with variable glass textures. A custom piano booth was constructed at the Paramount Sta Shop and anked by amepatterned chairs found at Omega Cinema Props, originally from a local restaurant. A garland of faux pine and Christmas lights lined the window, adding visual complexity to blend what was built and existing. A challenge was building the massive Tail o' the Cock sign added to the location. Set Designer Andrew Leitch drafted many di erent scales of restaurant sign from which to budget and make engineering plans. It was one of the most exciting moments to see the sign installed and lit up.
