Ann Harris was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, living in a mid-century modern house in Arcadia that was designed by her parents. Her father was an attorney and her mother stayed home and raised the family, and those traditional roles in uenced expectations as she started her college education at USC, getting a BFA in visual design. After graduating and getting married with the intention of being a working artist, Ann found herself divorced and living in Hawaii, where she earned a living as an interior designer and sold her paintings to local corporations for their o ces and at outdoor art markets. When her son became school age, she moved to Dallas, Texas working for Joe Camp Productions, the makers of Benji. Her Southern California connections led her to move back to her hometown of Los Angles, where she landed a position as a Set Designer at Universal. She worked in the Art Department drafting room, a large open space with 30 drafting stations, where Harris spent the 8-5 workday drafting scenery for a range of Universal productions. A strike by the actors and the subsequent work shutdown led to the layo of all the Universal Set Designers, and Ann found herself working freelance for Warner Bros., Fox, MGM and CBS, moving from production to production. One freelance job led her back to Universal, where she worked on the TV series Matlock, and reconnected with John Je eries, an Art Director she had worked with in the Universal Art Department.
