Instead of inventing fake stores, Paul and I agreed it was best to pay homage to the area by recreating the real businesses from 1973. We took over the corner business, demolishing existing walls, installing periodcorrect linoleum tile ooring and adding a dividing wall, to create a generic "store-for-rent" business that would become the fi lm's waterbed store and pinball palace. Across the street, the ugly 1980s block building turned into Rathbun's department store, adding large cut-out letters to spell out the name, tile board walls, palms and yellow ags on the turret. he northeast corner tire shop had been there since 1968 and an old Spanish building was turned into the Encino's Women's Club. wo large billboards were rented out and replaced with Magic Mountain and KHJ Channel 9 billboard artwork by Graphic Artist erry Hyatt. o pull o this large operation, detailed director notes and plans were made by Art Director Samantha Englender, who had a massive task of overseeing the de-modernization of this ENTRANCE WINDOW DISPLAY DISPLAY AREA AREA WINDOW DISPLAY DISPLAY AREA AREA 6'-0" BEAN BAG CHAIRS CHAIRS CHAIRS CHAIRS BAG CHAIRS BAG BEAN BAG CHAIRS CHAIRS L WATER BED BED WATER BED BED WATER BED BED WATER BED BED WATER BED BED WATER BED BED 5'-9" ARCH WALL ARCH WALL ARCH HAS LATTICE PANELS FOR FOR PANELS FOR PANELS THIS SET SET INDICATES SOFFIT OVERHANG SOFFIT OVERHANG SOFFIT EXIT TO EXIT TO EXIT PARKING PARKING CLG. We had fi ve other huge intersections requiring the same attention to remove all modern signage, parking meters and replace LED streetlights for cobra heads. his was important not only for period accuracy but also for the color temperature of the light. Cobra lights are mercury vapor, which put out a greenish blue-white light. Replacing the lights was necessary for the night-driving scenes, to light the environment and work with the fi lm stock. Getting the details of waterbed manufacturing and reproduction right was such a fun part to dive into. We made up a backstory that Gary and his friends had borrowed and pillaged the town to put together this store. An artsy friend made hand painted signs, while another handy one built the waterbeds. Each waterbed was custom built from Polaroids shared by a waterbed manufacturer from the early 1970s. Once waterbeds gained popularity in the later '70s and '80s, waterbed furniture was readily made out of oak in a style akin to dorm furniture. However, waterbed vendors cobbled early prototypes together from existing or custom wacky headboards and faux fur-lined platform beds that were hastily put together. he fi lm's waterbeds were constructed by the Paramount sta shop from our drawings and upholstered at Warner Bros.
