64 I M PS E . O R G On Monday 23rd, we officially started Flight 93 and were pleased when MPS said he was free to mix it. We needed him because the dialogue mix seemed to be so complicated. I then asked Oliver Tarney to co- supervise with me as I appeared to have my hands full. MPSE had announced their annual nominations; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and Kingdom of Heaven had all been nominated. I got a call from Jeanette Haley to say that Pietro Scalia was editing a film about Hannibal Lecter (Young Hannibal [YH]) and was in Soho. Why didn't I visit him and his assistant Valerio Bonelli. Why not. Pietro hadn't changed and we talked mostly about food! He asked if I would be interested in working on it? If so, he had a list of fx he needed and there would also be work on a trailer soon. Black Book for Paul Verhoeven was firming up. I had contacted Helen Wells in bookings at Pinewood for June/July mixing dates and they had to be as cheap as possible! We mixed the Hannibal trailer with Chris Burdon at DLL on February 1st. The next day I took James Harrison to meet Paul Verhoeven at the Soho Hotel. I explained that James would be co-supervising his film with me. I had coffee with Clare (post supervisor) and Tim Bricknell (producer BandE) on the morning of the 3rd and in the afternoon met with Hans van Helden regarding Black Book's position. Had a rare Alan Parker lunch at Randall and Aubin. Too much wine! On the 8th, BandE was locked for another temp. We had a screening of Flight 93 with Paul Greengrass. I then viewed 50 mins of Black Book with the producer Teun Hilte. The film was excellent! Started premixing BandE on the 15th at MPS studio in his house in Witham Friary. So this week of the 20th we were predubbing at MPS studio (called Liondubbs), shooting Foley at Universal on Flight 93 and meeting up with Paul Verhoeven on Black Book! Then we had a quick temp on BandE for another preview set for March 1st. On March the 3rd, I flew to LA for 3 days to attend the MPSE Awards on behalf of Charlie and Corpse Bride. Ascent Media paid and put me in the Beverly Hilton where the awards were being held. We lost as usual but I had a good time in the Hawaiian Bar with Peter Gleaves and James Mather who had won for The Curse of the Were Rabbit animation film. On the flight home there was an announcement over the intercom. "Is there a doctor on this aircraft?" We made an emergency landing at Salt Lake City after jettisoning all the fuel. Paramedics rushed on board and sorted out the member of the cabin crew that had been taken ill. After an hour or so we refuelled and continued our flight. Unfortunately, no hot food or alcohol was able to be served for that long, long journey home. I arrived at Heathrow late on the Monday morning and went straight to work. Alex went to Liondubbs to premix the Foley on BandE. Monday 13th, MPS started dialogue premixing on Flight 93 at Liondubbs but I had a screening to attend on Young Hannibal in Soho. I later talked to Stuart Baird about the Bond fx and told him how good Martin was. For some time we had been aware that our lease was running out at Film House and we had been searching for somewhere near to our present premises that we could move to. That was why I was so interested in Whitfield Studios but dismissed that idea for being too costly. My thoughts always drifted towards Goldcrest and now Keith Williams (ex Ascent Media) had moved there as CEO I thought it was worth a conversation. Carol and I discussed the logistics of taking over a floor of 65 Dean Street, re- wiring it, moving a few walls, splitting a room or two and making it secure. It seemed quite possible that we could do it. Bill Johnson said he would fly over from LA to discuss United 93 is a 2006 docudrama thriller film written and directed by Paul Greengrass.
