LMGI COMPASS | Winter 2022 • 33 DAVID YATES (Fantastic Beasts, Legend of Tarzan, Harry Potter) from London, as he accepted the EVA MONLEY AWARD from his longtime colleague, location professional Sue Quinn/LMGI. "It's a wonderful combination of artistry and logistics," he continued. "You bring those two extraordinary skill sets together—wonderful eye to nd locations that express story and the ability to deliver those locations to us. "Sue and I have been on many adventures over many years as we've looked for locations for our lms," said Yates, "going around the streets of Lisbon, New York, Paris and ying down the waterfalls of the Carbon ... sailing up the beautiful Scottish lochs in boats ... lots of boats!" The award is named for pioneer location professional Eva Monley, who brought her keen eye and logistical skills to legendary lmmakers such as John Huston, David Lean, Otto Preminger and Steven Spielberg. Her credits include Lawrence of Arabia, Exodus, The African Queen, and The Man Who Would Be King. Her ingenuity, resourcefulness and creative instincts set a high bar for our craft and the recipients of the award that bears her name have embraced their location colleagues as true collaborators. "This year, the LMGI has picked the perfect recipient … a tremendous supporter of the location profession," said Quinn, "An extremely creative lm director, he is also a special collaborator. "He loves going on location; it gives him the opportunity to develop his creative ideas. I have covered many miles with David in planes, trains, automobiles and helicopters—and boats! And I've enjoyed every journey—apart from the boat journeys which we would both like to forget!" "Silence is the last thing the world will ever hear from me!" signed actor, producer and activist MARLEE MATLIN as she accepted this year's HUMANITARIAN AWARD. She is a erce advocate for the deaf and physically challenged ghting to claim their place in Hollywood. "It is time to look at playing a deaf actor not as costume for ACTRESS MARLEE MATLIN, HUMANITARIAN AWARD RECIPIENT PRESENTER CAMRYN MANHEIM an able-bodied actor to put on," she insists. "Instead, let's hire hundreds of actors who are deaf or have a disability—because the talent is there!" Her latest lm, the acclaimed CODA (Children of Deaf Adults), was cast—due to her urging—with fellow actors from the Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles. Marlee credits her success to the support she received as a child to "follow my dreams." Her parents encouraged her to attend ICODA (International Center on Deafness, the Arts & Education) in Chicago, which produces major productions each season using sign language and spoken English simultaneously. She also received early encouragement from actor Henry Winkler who saw her perform there. At age 21, she became the youngest and only deaf person to receive the Academy Award, for Best Actress for Children of a Lesser God. "Mentorship, collaboration, authenticity in representation and most importantly, access—all are important ingredients in how lm and television can not only tell stories successfully but can do it with equity." "Marlee is a badass, a supreme badass!" said friend and fellow actor Camryn Manheim in her introduction. "She doesn't just merely open doors, she kicks them down!! That commitment has given birth to an entire generation of activists and done so much for badly needed diversity both on camera and behind the scenes." The LMGI is proud to honor Marlee Matlin for her passion, mentorship and work with the many organizations that bene t those within her own community and beyond. MARLEE MATLIN AND CAST FROM CODA
