rom early conersations with Steen, we knew we wanted both the gritty reality of the streets…and also a heightened sense of color and theatricality. We tried to bring both of these into the demolition site and ocs. n one sense, the street is ery real—and certainly gritty!—but in another sense, the whole thing was ery heightened. The buildings were skeletons—partially standing and showing fragments of the lives displaced. The whole place was overshadowed by a billboard for the coming Lincoln Center. We tried to bring a strong color sense into the stage sets as well— from reds of Doc's to the bright greens and pinks of nita and ernardos apartment The location team, led by manager ob Striem, worked with the city of New York to get the impossiblelong closures so ustin eck and the company could stage dances in the streets. It's impossible to run out and grab elaborate sequences like we had on intermittent trac holds. obs team and the mayors oce were etraordinary. We closed an intersection just above Central Park and a multiblock stretch of St. icholas enue for the merica seuence. en so, we hit the limit of what the city could manage and had to look for more sites. aterson, ew ersey, was a hub for the film already with the demolition site, but we found more there. We were able to close a two- block strip of llison Street right in downtown. This gave us a great spot for the Sharks' territory. ed use it for large parts of merica and the et Song. etween this, ernardos boing gym and the demo site, we had a ery workable shooting hub. Separating the Sharks and ets turf relied heaily on the research and graphics. Emily Lutyens had been doing a deep dive in research and signage for both the uerto ican and nglo neighborhoods from the very beginning.
