There was a ghostwhite sunbleached ig oy diner and a fully built main street with a ewel o theater to frame the faded memories of classic mericana. wane and head of graphics artin harles transformed the fiestory atrium of a closed ew eican state building into an apocalyptic church filled with gratied stained glass and a haunting blue and black ray tunnel of sun irradiated horror. eginning with the gold filter shielding on the and inchs hamat suit, artin concentrated on deeloping the graphic effects and technology that would filter out or be damaged by the harmful radiation of an atmospherically eposed earth. The Journey: inchs ourney is finished with his death, a final lesson in humanity for eff. buttery lands to signify that life will continue. location was needed that would eleate and match the myth and maesty of the moment. Tucked in the corner of the state is Shiprock, utting powerfully up to the heaens. n our design reiew with the producers, Steen Spielberg turned to me with a smile, saying Shiprock was first considered for the landing site in Close Encounters. That is a moment that still sends a shier down my spine, and confirmed the appropriate button for inchs final moment. ltimately, the story ends with eff and the dog, oodyear, crossing an abandoned olden ate ridge. t was the perfect isual metaphor to leae this eistential ourney through life with hope, comfort and oy.
