28 I M PS E . O R G story about some vocals Richard and I recorded for the fi lm that never got used... One of the lyrics in the opening song of the fi lm is "pumpkins scream in the dead of night.'' So, naturally, Richard and I made a note to record some screams, pained moans and grunts for the pumpkins. We both performed various short vocals specifi cally for that moment. But, unfortunately, Danny Elfman, who was running the mix of the fi lm, dropped them during the fi nal dub. Of course, I was there for that fateful moment. Part of me knew it was going to happen, but I felt I needed to say something. I walked up to him and asked, "Really, Danny...? You wrote the lyric 'pumpkins scream in the dead of night'... And you don't want to HEAR them...?" He chuckled ... but didn't say anything else. And I let it go. A lot of our sound eff ects in that fi lm was dropped—or played extremely low—because the fi lm is essentially a musical, and such is the nature of musicals. I still dutifully archived those vocals we recorded into our library, and we used them a few times since. I actually cut a few of them into a fi lm that Richard Anderson himself directed—Lee'd the Way. Even though he's a dear friend of mine, I was humbled to have been asked by Richard—an Oscar-winning sound editor in his own right—to cut the sound eff ects on a fi lm he himself directed! So as a small cameo, our screams are heard together in a key moment of the fi lm. When it's released, see if you can hear them! You'll also be able to hear the original session of those vocals we recorded in The Hollywood Sound Museum's sound library.
