M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 11 Welcome, members to our Winter 2022 edition of MPSE Wavelength. It is hard to believe we are already publishing our eighth quarterly. The MPSE launched its premiere edition in Spring 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown and amid a growing global pandemic. Wavelength prevailed despite the imperiousness of this virus through the following 19 months to present day. I have a wealth of gratitude and appreciation for the MPSE members and contributors who have willingly been by my side since the very beginning. This includes all participants of every story, which are sometimes one in the same. They all have donated countless hours around their active sound editing careers. I owe endless thanks to these very special working professionals for volunteering all their e„ orts, collaboration, research, knowledge, enthusiasm, and all of their precious time. I'd also like to congratulate MPSE President Mark Lanza on being re-elected to a second term and join him in extending congratulations to Secretary David Barber and incoming Board of Directors Korey Pereira and Harry Snodgrass. Congratulations to returning incumbent Board members David Bondelevitch, Baylon Fonseca, Kevin Howard, Eric Marks, Stuart Morton, Solange Schwalbe, and myself, Christina Horgan. Thanks to all who voted. I am delighted beyond words to be featuring this quarter's cover story from the world of video game audio! On the cover is Robert Krekel, Phillip Kovats, and Bruce Swanson representing the highly acclaimed gaming studio, Naughty Dog. These past Naughty Dog Audio Directors sat down with Wavelength contributor Eric Marks MPSE for this fascinating cover story, "The History of Naughty Dog Audio" page 50. Just to toss out a bit of video game industry info picked up from usatoday.com/tech (June 10, 2021), the NPD Group said in 2020, the global gaming industry was worth $152.1 billion. Additionally, the U.S. video game industry alone grew 27% to $56.9 billion in revenue, surpassing movies and music combined. Statistics show this fi gure is expected to increase by $17.6 billion in 2021, and by 2025, the unifi ed market is set to reach a $207.6 billion value! Wavelength contributor Miguel Araujo continues his fascinating and inspiring interview with supervising sound editor Peter Albrechtsen MPSE, David Barber MPSE, and director Robert Machoian about transcending their creative boundaries in part 2 of "Orchestrating Emotions Without Music" page 78. Supervising sound editor & sound designer Jacob Ribico„ shares his arduous journey exacting in his work of resurrecting the sound of the early 20th century in his article "Refl ection Through Soundscape: Creating the Sonic Environment of Passing " page 36. Inspired by the article "To Boldly Go Where No Sound Editors Have Gone Before," which appeared in the Wavelength Fall 2021 quarterly, David Bondelevitch pays tribute page 30 to "Doug Grindsta- : Where It All Began," "a long time ago…" before the discovery of "…a galaxy far, far away." Be sure to check out our regular columns, including Korey Pereira's review in "Tech Corner" page 19 of RipX DeepAudio from Hit'n'Mix, and Vickie Sampson has great answers to more great questions in her column "Dialogue Detective" page 23. And last but not least, I'd like to note two photo credits by Dino DiMuro of his photos which appeared on pages 51 (middle photo) and 57 (top photo) in Chris Assells' article (Wavelength Fall 2021) "Chris Assells Has Left the Building – Retirement: It's Not Just Oatmeal, Ovaltine, and Lipitor." Finally, I'd like to wish you all happy holidays and a healthy and safe transition into 2022. On the cover: L-R: Naughty Dog Audio Directors Bruce Swanson (2002-2015), Robert Krekel (2017-2021), and Phillip Kovats (2011-2017).
