35 M Denis is the most amazing erson ou could ever ork ith. As as the assemblage of artisans, creatives, and actors across the board. This as one of those eeriences that oull remember for a lifetime. Its a subect matter that so man of us love and then to have a director like Denis. It as ust reall onderful. F acueline, erent ou living near here rank erbert rote the book W es, hen I as uite oung living in Berke le, I lived on a houseboat in Sausalito at a as number si, hich became uite an iconic lace in the Ba Area. Alan atts houseboat as right across the a. ears later, a friend of mine ho as riting at the Chronicle told me that rank erbert ould go to Alan atts ferr and ork on Dune. is houseboat as about 30 feet from the bo of m houseboat, and all that time I didnt even kno that. F So it as destin. W It as. F ell, the hole movie looks amazing. Ive been a fan of the book for over 0 ears. Im sure Im not alone in that, but I as so leased. I have to tell ou, at the screening, a colleague asked me hat I thought hen the credits started to roll, and I said, Its a triumh. M That means the orld to me. I hoe that everone goes to see this on a big screen and the ne devotees eno it ust as much as ou and I do. W I call it the Dune everones been aiting to get made. W All of their raings ere gauze. The didnt use goggles. The rotected their faces from the sun ith gauze raings. The location manager brought us vials of all the di erent rock and sand colors from ordan. e matched the gauze to those colors, because I anted them to be camou aged. The stillsuit e matched to the dark rocks. As there crossing the desert, e raed it in gauzes that also shift as Bob mentioned. Like the Tuareg, the shift ith the sands. ou get that romantic feeling of movement. e also made turbans and face ras. ou see their faces in the dramatic scenes but the could be ulled u on their heads hen the have to rotect themselves from the ind and sand. F Lets talk about the arkonnen, the main antagonists. M The arkonnen are badass. I think of .. Giger. Everthing as kind of dark and sider and bon and like bug arts, even the helmets. e looked at insect heads. At a moments notice, ou kno if oure looking at the arkonnens, the Atreides, or the Arrakeens. Theres no confusion. Sometimes ou get ust a visual second on screen to see ho the good or the bad gus are hen there having these battles. W I love iter de ries David Dastmalchian. I al as think that dark and evil is alas the hardest thing to costume ithout being overarching. es like a stiletto. I comared him to a raing mantis. That long, encillike black gure. The back of the costume is all laced ith this line like a retile run ning don his back. Theres something about the sil houette that I ust loved. Id looked for the fabric for ears. Its a shin, black ta eta coated in some kind of acrlic nish. It looks like oil cloth, but less organ ic. I ust love ho he ears itith such alomb. F There are a lot of bold, smart choices in this lm, and a lot of them are directorial. hat as it like orking ith Denis illeneuve W es incredibl collaborative and doesnt mi cromanage. e lets ou come u ith it. hen ou sho him, ou kno ouve got it because he has such visceral reaction. e has this lineuntil ou get that line, ou kee going. ed sa, I deel love it. I deel love it, acueline. I w s k t d k evil w s r co u • t be o• r • . He's like a i€ ‚ o. 35 Baron Haronnen concept art: eith hristensen Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures
