BACKGROUND TIPS
B
ackground
actors are
an important
element of the
production,
but, as harsh as
it is, they can
also be the most
cuttable in the
editing room.
Here are some
guidelines to
help you make it
to the screen.
REACT
APPROPRIATELY
TO YOUR
ENVIRONMENT.
If there's a burning wreck
in the middle of the street,
it's probably not a realistic
reaction to walk by as if
nothing is happening. And,
of course, don't look at the
camera.
DRESS
APPROPRIATELY.
Wearing clothing with
potentially offensive
language or images, sports
logos or other copyrighted
material is tempting fate.
You definitely don't want to
get cut by the lawyers.
DON'T
OVERDO IT.
If the stars of the
show are having a
conversation in a
restaurant, about to
drop the big, dramatic
reveal and you're in
the back laughing
and gesticulating
wildly, you're probably
going to get cut. As
a background actor,
if you're drawing the
viewers' attention at
the expense of the
principals, you're doing
it wrong.
