With Matt Gatlin overseeing everything Redwood, Greg Hooper pretty much took on the rest of the film. First was ouglastown, which needed to have a completely dierent look than edwood. This town needed to be rough and not so comfortable. The interior at San Cristobal selected for Mary's Saloon required a massive remodel to open it up. Again, Wendy came up with some fabulous custom wallpaper and the new draper, Joel la, was able to shine and create the focal point drapery around the stage. With Mary's apartment upstairs, Cynthia and I relished in the opportunity to design and dress a sumptuous, strong, feminine, personal space for the woman in charge. By the time shooting was complete at Douglastown, the production had had numerous shutdowns due to COVID, and the winter was coming on fast. I believe by the end of shooting, there was a total of five shutdowns. We were waking up to snowstorms, with our dry western towns covered in a layer of white snow. Redwood Tannery and the church and graveyard were dressed and ready. Battling the snowstorms, we managed to get the tannery shot but were snowed out of the graveyard. The production had to move onto the last town, so we decided to just bring the graveyard along. It became an eleventh hour scramble to relocate the graveyard, in a snowstorm, while the company moved into Mayesville. Mayesville is the final example of the delight it was to work with Jeymes. Earlier on in preproduction, as we were defining the town's looks, I had a bit of an epiphany that I wasn't sure how Jeymes would respond to. I figured since Mayesville is the only white town in the film, why don't I just make it all white. And I meant ALL white. The buildings, the carriages, the ground, the horses and obviously the people. Jeymes did not hesitate to enthusiastically approve and embrace the concept which resulted in an impeccably white-on-white town which, of course, true to the spirit of the filmgets robbed. ADG A.
