tables where no food or drink was ever served, just the gospel according to Tammy. Above all, the Bakkers loved to entertain. Tammy's set could be transformed, removing the tables and redressing with a sea of miniature white Christmas trees for the holidays. It could be a disco for New Year's Eve or just a simple sitting area for a heart- to-heart conversation. The sets were placed side-by-side, with Jim's side housing the phone banks. On the opposite end of the stage, Tammy could exit her set into a long hallway that led to her all-mirrored dressing, with the same wall-to-wall white carpet, the rows of shoes and dolls, the re ections of the chandeliers, the re ections of Tammy. With the backstage, the hidden entrances and exits to Jim's set and the decadence of Tammy's hallway and dressing room, I tried to bring out some of those fi rst feelings I felt as we scouted their actual sound stage and dressing rooms in South Carolina. I wanted to convey the adulation of the huge audiences which for a long time until scandals hit, hid the reality of their lives, the decadence, the greed and the separation and suspicions that had crept into their marriage. ne fi nal thought. peaking with so many people in Charlotte, it was incredible how many people were touched for better or worse by the Bakkers.
