This side references the Wrburg witch trials, one of the largest witch trials in all of urope, which took place in Wrburg, Germany, during the early th century. Together, they show a path of how one becomes a witch, how the fi lm's witch became the witch seen today. The apartment gives a nod to the candy bait and a link to the cottage by way of the hardwood oors —the rooms and hallways have various candy patterns incorporated into the hardwood oors candies that are later seen making up the candy cottage walls. Each door in the apartment can lead to one of three places, indicated by symbols on the backplates beneath each door knob. One of the worlds the apartment leads to is Grielda's cottage. The path to the cottage is strewn with the toys of children who have been lured to unfortunate ends. Initially, the production was going to build a section of the cottage on location in a park and use visual e ects set extensions to fi ll in the rest. Time and budget constraints meant a script and schedule change so that the entire exterior would be VFX and the interior would be built in three sections on a stagethe fi rst room of the cottage on a special e ects shake platform, the candy staircase next to it and the candy catacombs on the other side of the stairs.
