how well established everything is over there— with so many prop houses and resources at hand. In New Zealand, we tend to rely on having to be uite resourcefulto makefindadapt things to suit. This meant that selecting a multi-skilled team was critical, so that we could bend in the many directions these sets were going to take us. We had a lot of environments to create in this film —the ranch, Phil's space in the barn, the cowboy uarters, ose's wellworn but hospitable ed Mill cafe and lodgings, tent sites, wagons, a train, saloon, funeral home and store interiors. Jane was particularly adamant that the sets and dressing looked and felt authentic and of the period. She would spend a lot of time with us when furnishing the rooms—keen to see furniture moved and reworked until the space felt right. The set decoration team designed and manufactured furniture, wallpaper and linoleum —referencing the patterns and styles of the time. The textile team handsewed silk taeta linings for cons and many a tablecloth, with detailed darning to illustrate the wear and tear of constant use in the ed Mill. With assistant set decorator Gareth Edwards and a talented dressing team, we started with the sets in the South Island, putting a lot of detail into the barn and the cowboys' quarters to help set the mood of life on the ranch. It was incredibly moving to witness the response from Jane and the actors to this world that Grant with the collective eorts from the whole art team) had created in such a remote place. A fantastic way to start such a creatively rewarding project. ADG D. BURBANK HOUSE STAIR FOYER CONCEPT USING RHINO, MAYA AND PHOTOSHOP BY LIAM BECK.
