Amber Richards, Set Decorator: The challenge and fun of creating a large Montana ranch house here in New Zealand was that we were starting from scratch, creating a world initially viewed through a large collection of historical photos that Jane Campion and researcher Phil Clark had compiled. Having never been to Montana, these images gave me a glimpse into life there; a sense of the vast and empty landscapes, large ranch houses—the scale of which is rare to find in ew ealandthe cold, the heat and the dusty, hardworking lives of the cowboys. As I delved deeper into the style of the house for the Burbank brothers, Grant Major began to focus in on Theodore oosevelt's homeagamore Hill. The interiors were quite elaborate and decorative when viewed in color, but in black-and-white what stood out was the bold shapes and gleaming furniture silhouettes throughout the dark rooms. The eect conveyed a certain sparsity to the spaces that we aimed to capture in our interiors. It soon became clear that in order to achieve a convincing interpretation of this style, I needed to forage further afield to access the dierent furniture and objects not readily available in New Zealand. There was a small window with just enough time to get a container back before the country shut down for Christmas, so I headed to Los Angeles. Four and a half days to shop and fill a foot container was a challenge that was made possible with the sharing of information and help of the generous people of LA. It was a fantastic opportunity to see the scale of A. BURBANK KITCHEN INTERIOR CONCEPT. MAYA AND PHOTOSHOP BY LIAM BECK. B. BURBANK HOUSE INTERIOR LOUNGE/DINING ROOM.
