COOKING COMPETITION Erin Evenson of Brooklyn, New York, was overcome with emotion when Bob Torkelson, President and COO of Trinchero Family Estates, announced that she had won $100,000 in Sutter Home's Build a Better Burger contest for her 7 Train Caramelized Green Curry burger. F or many folks, barbecue season never really ends, especially those people lucky enough to live in California. Nevertheless, Memorial Day is often thought of as the holiday that kicks off the summer, and that means it's time to fire up the grill. Sutter Home Family Vineyards has annually celebrated the arrival of summer with its Build a Better Burger recipe contest, which has been going strong for 22 years. The contest is open to all comers, with a simple premise: Make a burger that knocks our socks off, and we'll give you $100,000. That's right, $100,000 for a burger. Makes you want to rethink the notion of throwing another shrimp on the 'barbie. This year, the finals returned to the Sutter Home winery in St. Helena, in the heart of Napa Valley. State regulations chased the event to Chicago last year, but this year everyone Katie Sherrill's Korean-Hawaiian Taco Truck Burger was paired with Sutter Home's Cabernet Sauvignon. 108  /  the tasting panel  /  july 2013 TP0713_100-148.indd 108 6/24/13 6:03 PM
