[The Old Timers'] big lament is the decline in support for leagues in the city and the change in the speed of life. Adults don't necessarily have or make time to play in leagues anymore. LLB: With the Dodgers and Angels so close by, where does a team like the Long Beach Armada fit in and how important are they to the community? TM: They had a hard time drawing an audience. A lot of people blamed the prices. The other thing was that Long Beach State outdrew the Armada. Other teams have come through there. You had the Breakers, Riptide and Armada. It's a tough thing to draw. There was talk in the late '50s, when the Angels were coming into Major League Baseball, of building a stadium in Long Beach. A lot of people don't know that. It obviously didn't happen, but, it's always been a big question about whether a team can compete here. It's hard to compete when you've got the Angels south, the dodgers north. But, I think the city is big enough to support that if it made sense. n Baseball in Long Beach Arcadia Publishing, pp81 $19.99
