AUGUST 2010 SPORTS & EDUCATION 16 EDITOR'S LETTER There is one day that will always stay clear in my mind. It was a quiet October night a few years ago, when I came home to find a surprise sitting on top of my kitchen table – a large, white envelope addressed to me and stamped "USC." It had been several months since I had applied for a spot at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and I hadn't heard a word. However, that day everything changed as I ripped open the envelope and found my official acceptance letter. I shrieked with joy and felt so much excitement at the possibilities for the future. That is the kind of feeling everyone should be able to experience in their life – a sense of accomplishment from their hard work. We have dedicated this issue to people who have done just that, and those who strive to – whether it is in education or athletics. Who better to represent what it means to work hard and accomplish amazing things than local superstar Misty May? Our cover girl is a great example of someone who dreamed big and pursued her passion long after attending CSULB. Two gold medals later, she is still at the top of her game and is also pursuing higher education as she goes after a Master's degree. Misty continues to inspire us, see pg. 40. This city is never void of success stories. How amazing is it that one entire local senior class will be making their way to college this fall, see pg. 46. Yes, it's true. The entire 2010 senior class of St. Anthony High received acceptance letters to the college of their choice and will be representing Long Beach at various campuses. In my book, that is what you call an A+. Across town, Poly High also assures us we will certainly be seeing more Misty Mays in the future. On pg. 50, writer Kevin Hunter introduces us to some rising athletes from Poly who not only have been stars on the field, but also have been top students in the classroom. These students will continue the legacy of the great school and this city in more ways than one. For those of you thinking of heading to college soon or who want to learn more about what opportunities are out there, we have provided a guide to some of the best local universities to help you accomplish your dreams, see pg. 55. Having had the privilege of attending USC, a school that prides itself on both academics and sports, it's exciting to live in a city that does the same. Sincerely, Brenda Duran Editor-in-Chief
