44 I m ps e . o rg Serving as a single point of contact for every sound component from the original capture through approvals and completion, in terms of sound, the Sound Designer can spearhead the project's creative ambitions, scheduling, and operations. There are numerous opportunities associated with every aspect of short and long form sound, including location recording, editing of dialogue, effects, Foley, backgrounds, post synchronous dialogue, re-recording, and mastering. As the project's Sound Designer, you can also provide a crucial creative and administrative role, serving as a focal point in deciphering scripted materials, budgets, and schedules—in terms of sound. This includes filling a critical need for oversight on sound ideas extractable from the shooting script, storyboards, visual effects concept art, previsual sketches, the production's shooting schedule, and daily call sheets. It is often helpful if the Sound Designer is versed in deciphering budget documents, cost reports, and remote collaboration tools from software vendors such as Movie Magic, Google Gsuite, Slack, PIX, SourceConnect, Evercast, Sohonet, and more. Given that production is an ever-evolving, craft-driven road show and content creation an ever- evolving art form, it's best if Sound Designers stay up to date with the latest trends in international sound practices, and the many recent developments in both hardware and software. Digging Deeper Into Sound Designer's Role The Sound Designer serves the production in a leadership role, as an advocate demystifying technical, creative, and budgetary issues. Ideally, they provide other departments counsel on all sound- related activities, before, during, and after production. In essence, the Sound Designer aligns production personnel with solutions to downstream problems and buffers any interdepartmental friction. The Sound Designer provides a precision focus on sound-specific issues both on and off the set, in the cutting room, and throughout delivery of the finished soundtrack. Directors, editors, producers, studios, and streaming content creators all benefit from having a go-to person who is empowered to make creative and operational decisions on behalf of the project, in terms of sound.
