8 I M PS E . O R G Welcome to fall! This edition of Wavelength is brimming with a great variety of content this quarter! We are honored to feature Dennis Drummond, this year's MPSE Career Achievement Award recipient for our cover story. Dennis looks back on his career and is joined by his wife Kim to answer a few questions from Mark Lanza and Paulette Lifton (page 20). Eric Marks MPSE is joined by his special guest and Trekkie dad Neil Marks! Together, they bring you a fascinating interview with supervising sound editor Matthew E. Taylor and sound designer Timothy Farrell for their work on Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard and it all starts on page 24. If you've been looking for an outlet to unwind by, look no further than Disney+'s new episodic Zenimation. Sit back and kick up your feet and become mesmerized to only the soothing sound eŒ ects of themes from clips of some of your favorite Disney animated fi lms. Ommmm... Steve Lee shares with us his inspiring interview (page 34) with the talented folks behind the magic of imagineering this series, the creator and editor David Bess, sound designer Shannon Mills, re-recording mixer David Fluhr, and VP of Disney Animation Publicity and executive producer of the show, Amy Astley. Wylie Stateman gives us a wonderful account of sound designing plus an in-depth look inside his role as Sound Designer on the mini-series The Queen's Gambit (page 42). The show walked away with three Golden Reel Awards this year, including Episodic Long Form in Music/Musical; Dialogue/ADR; and EŒ ects/Foley. "Chris Assells Has Left the Building" (page 48) and he entertains us with his colorful insight of his fi rst year transitioning into his new role as a retiree. I'd say Chris earned his new role after his career which garnered an impressive 225+ credits in fi lm and television, beginning with Blade Runner (1982) and includes too many box-o¤ ce fi lms to list here, but a few of these little blockbusters include Skyfall, The Bourne Ultimatum, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, and one of my forever favorites of all time, the 1992 fi lm, The Last of the Mohicans. Miguel Araujo returns with an incredible two-part interview "Orchestrating Emotions Without Music" (page 60) with sound designer and re-recording mixers Peter Albrechtsen and David Barber and joined by director Robert Machoian on their ambitious endeavor and brave creative process for the fi lm The Killing of Two Lovers, released in US theaters in May 2021. Last but not least, Eddy Joseph takes us back to another time from his memoirs when he was hired to work on the 1987 classic mystery thriller Angel Heart (Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro) on page 70. Don't skip over a thing, be sure to check out what's new with EIPMA (page 10); Korey Pereira gives us another great review in "Tech Corner" (page 13); we introduce you to Xinyue Yu in the "Student Corner" (page 16); Vickie Sampson answers more great questions in her column "Dear Dialogue Detective" (page 18); and our President, Mark Lanza MPSE, announces some emotional news in his letter on page 6, which I hope you just read. Don't forget to visit the MPSE Store at mpse.org/store. We've got some great swag just calling your name! Best of luck, love and life to you on your new journey Anne-Marie Slack, you will be dearly missed. A big welcome to Tracie Costabile Dumm, Business AŒ airs/ O¤ ce Manager, MPSE. I hope you all stay safe while enjoying the last of your summer days and the seasonal transition into fall.
