52 I m ps e . o rg It was Thanksgiving and he was heading home for the holiday. This dear sweet man went home for Thanksgiving and died. Crap. Horribly sad. I sat in that room looking at his photos and posters which he had told me he was glad I liked. I could still feel his presence. I sat and I wept. Like most weeping, it was as much about myself as it was about who we lost. I thought about my years sitting in dark windowless rooms, the family dinners I had missed, the friends we had lost along the way. Vince Harrington, who was my Lee Marvin in The Big Red One when I first started and now long gone, sweet angry vulnerable Mary, tough guy/soft guy Randy with the huge candy containers in his room there I think to lure visitors in, funny, kind, and immediately friendly Joe (I don't think I ever made a friend faster), the other older fatherly sunny Joe, Santa Claus Sandy, and dear god, Gregg, what happened? There were more, more than I had ever realized. We all have one of those lists. I didn't want to be on somebody's list. I decided I didn't want to die in the chair. I wanted to get out while all of my parts still worked. I didn't want to be rolled out of my room like that guy at Todd years ago and have my still warm seat filled by a replacement because after all the mix must go on. Out on my terms, baby. That's how I wanted to do it. So I did. Well, that certainly took a dark turn didn't it? You came expecting stories about watching American Pickers and early-bird dinners at Denny's and you got this. Sorry. My father, who we just lost at 96 years old, retired in his 50s and long ago told me retiring was the The Skyfall post team with director Sam Mendes at De Lane Lea.
