She was very passionate about every facet of costume design and already touted the hefty rsum she had always dreamed ofdesigning hit fi lms like Baby Driver, Captain Fantastic, and The Hateful Eight. She had worked numerous jobs as a PA, costumer, and assistant costume design- er, all with male directors. It wasn't until she started designing smaller indies di- rected by women Gia Coppola's Palo Alto and Susanna Fogel's Life Partners that she realized the need for women to fi ll the director's chair. "I was literally bursting at the seams to try my hand at the full picture." We enable actors to fi nd their characters, set the tone, while defi ning the aesthetic and emotional arcs within a script. We put endless thought into the visual story- telling. We collaborate with each depart- ment to ensure every inch of a costume brings the script to life. We create visual iconography, build a team and commu- nity, and elevate the stories to their full potential. There are so many ways this in- uences the projects I am getting to write and direct today." To catapult her journey, Hoff man applied to the AFI Directing Workshop for Women. The tuition-free program is dedicated to helping women with industry experience explore direct- ing. This resulted in her debut short, a Western called The Good Time Girls, starring Laura Dern.
