Over at the mill, with only weeks to go, the Universal construction department led by construction coordinator Jay Jergensen, foreman Chris Loftland and head paint foreman Richard Segovia continued to pull off miracles, fi nding lumber, steel, Speed Rail, glass, harnesses and construction materials that were extremely scarce in the Los Angeles area. As a result of the pandemic, scarcity of materials due to an increase in home-renovation projects and interruptions in international shipping led to a 40-percent hike in prices, which severely gouged the build budget. As other departments started work, art, set dec and construction crews felt like veterans. Telling other crews they will be OK, because some were stepping out of their houses for the fi rst time in months. "Bring a toothbrush to work," "Eat in your car" and "You're on mute" replaced typical on-set conversations to which we were all accustomed. The fi rst scheduling meeting with assistant director Van Hayden informed the crew that we would be starting day one on stage. No location days as a buff er. After testing, the crew arrived early on Monday to shoot the fi rst scenes in Kenan's house. It took unprecedented collaboration and patience D.WAKE UP WITH KENAN MORNING SHOW SET.
