opportunity to combine craft with humanity. But it also had to be done at breakneck speed. A nine- to-fi ve day doesn't exist in this line of work, and attempting to bring the artistry and thought processes of fi lmmaking to network television without the benefi t of time is, in a word, hard. Really hard. The design team had to imagine this Cori character and what she would have valued when she previously occupied those spaces, that imaginary time that was never written into existence or performed on screen. This informed everything from the decor choices to the selection of artwork by mostly Black women artists from Atlanta found by researching local galleries and Instagram accounts. A blue sectional sofa with a full, solid shape grounds the open space of the living area of the home. The color is cheerful but also reminds the viewer that this has been a place that has witnessed tragedy and sadness. Once we had theoretically built and decorated the spaces to be as pretty and functional for family life as Cori would have wanted, it was time to go in and fuck them up in just the right ways. What would have fallen into disarray after a year of her absence? The cereal boxes on the counter, the toys and dolls all over the living room fl oor, random single shoes, a feather boa awkwardly choking the neck of a fl oor lamp, too much crap on the counter and under the coff ee table. C Each room in the home has a distinct area but each one blends into the next. They promote the fl ow of the family's togetherness and sometimes provide cause for confl ict. The crew was not just building hero sets for a single episode, we also need to provide a space for the writers to continue to bring these characters and stories to life over the course of a season or possibly multiple seasons. Upstairs the characters get to have their own private worlds, Kenan in his own bedroom, the girls in their shared room and in their playroom. Downstairs is about togetherness; the world of the family unit and the open fl oor plan allows the audience to notice Cori's absence while witnessing Kenan's support structure rearrange itself to fi ll in FLOOR #03 #03 #03 MUDROOM 7'-0" 1'-0" J 12'-0" 10" 2'-0" 8" 5'-0" 10" 2'-0" 8" 12'-0" 6" 5'-10" 3'-6" 8'-2" brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing brick landing 2'-11" 8'-0" 4'-6" 10'-0" C D B A 25'-6" 7'-0" #04 #04 #04 #04 #04 #01 #01 #01 #01 #01 #05 #05 #05 #02 #02 #02 #02 #02 18'-8" 24'-6" 14'-0" 3'-0" 8'-0" 3'-0" 14'-0" DINING ROOM DINING ROOM DINING ROOM DINING ROOM DINING ROOM DINING ROOM DINING ROOM DINING ROOM PORCH FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM FAMILY ROOM KITCHEN BACKYARD GARAGE GARAGE +6" +12" +18" +24" +8" +16" +24" 3'-3" 3'-0" 6'-0" 5'-3" 3'-0" 3'-6" 1'-0" 25'-0" 1'-6" 4'-0" 7'-3" 14'-0" 10'-0" 1'-9" OPEN 6'-6" 9'-10" OPEN 6'-6" 5'-6" 4'-0" 8'-0" 14'-0" 1'-8" 6'-0" 1'-8" 3'-0" 1'-8" CLOSET 1'-0" 3'-9" 17'-6" 5'-0" 6" 6" 4'-0" 3'-0" 7'-3" 3'-6" confirm sink 1'-4" 1'-10" 4" 3'-0" 1'-4" 1'-10" 4" 2'-2" 2'-4" 4" 2'-4" 4" 4'-4" 2'-2" wild / on wagon wild / on wagon wild / on wagon F G E B3 B3 B3 B3 B3 B3 B3 B3 B2 B2 B2 C1 C1 C1 FOYER L A1 A1 A1 A1 A1 A1 A2 A2 A2 A2 A2 C2 C2 C2 C2 C2 C 3'-3" 14'-2" 3'-6" 4" 3'-6" 4" 3'-6" 7" 4" 3'-6" 7" 16'-2" 10'-0" o.c. 10'-0" o.c. 7'-6" o.c. 4'-3" o.c. 5'-9" o.c. o.c. o.c. 31'-9" R ±11'-6" to STAGE WALL ±14'-0" to BACKING 5'-6" 6" 2'-4" 4" 2'-4" 4" 4'-4" 1'-3" 4" 3'-0" 7" 7" 1'-9" B1 B1 B1 T1 T1 T1 T1 CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT make this unit wild maybe on wagon maybe on wagon maybe on wagon CAMERA PORT confirm fridge confirm fridge confirm stove book shelf wild WILD WILD WILD WILD SHELVES 1'-8" 1'-8" OPEN 4'-0" 6'-6" 1'-3" 1'-3" S 25'-6" T 25'-0" 6" 18'-8" U 12'-0" SHELVES make entire window open as camera port open as camera port open as camera port open as camera port open as camera port open as camera port open as camera port CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT CAMERA PORT 6" U1 U1 U1 7'-8" 8'-2" 15'-9" 2'-6" 3'-3" C ~21'-0" 32'-0" revised patios, revised patios, revised patios, added greens added greens added greens C.
