6 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2021 L E T T E R FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members, I am so honored to serve as the new president of the LMGI. It was 2015 when I fi rst discovered the existence of what was then the LMGA (Location Managers Guild of America). Randomly searching online for location- related professional groups from my home in Toronto, I was thrilled to fi nd that there was an organization of location professionals who understood the scope and nuances of what we do and were committed to promoting our role in the creative process in all the visual mediums we are a part of. I sent off an inquiry and was invited to join. I jumped right in! As a self-described sci-fi , fantasy and comic book nerd, I volunteered to participate on the LMGI panel at Comic-Con 2016 in San Diego. I come from a region with a vibrant, engaged community of hardworking location pros in Canada, but getting to meet colleagues from other regions and countries who all share the same passion for what we do made me realize that I was truly part of something much larger. That impact of being part of a global community has never left me and has, in fact, affected me profoundly. I am proud to be counted in the ranks of the distinguished, talented, inspiring membership of the LMGI. Every event I've been able to be a part of on either coast, or even overseas, reaffi rms that bond we all have … that no matter where we are, we can raise respect for our craft by working together. I am the Guild's fi rst international president. This refl ects how the LMGI has expanded beyond borders, embracing membership from every corner of the globe where stories are being told. I salute the dedicated people whose hard work has built the Guild's strong foundation. I extend my thanks to every member who has volunteered time and energy to this organization, to the members who have sat on the Board, and to the past presidents who have led us to where we are today. Our organizational roots are deep. As the guardians of our legacy, our new Board members will draw strength from the past to face the many challenges ahead. After a long year of uncertainty, we are fi nally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. During the pandemic, our members have stuck together, Zooming in from around the world. "Coffee Tuesdays" offered a space to not feel so alone and provided a forum to share and grow. Discussions on racial equality, diversity and inclusion led to the creation of committees to improve our very own workplaces through education and outreach. We hosted virtual Fam Tours and learned about COVID protocols and new technologies for virtual scouting. The Guild produced an incredible virtual awards show, and this year's committee is now at work planning the 2021 virtual event to be held October 23.
