4 • LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2021 Summer, with its long, sun-drenched days, is here and production is booming! No lazy, hazy, crazy days ahead for us! With the roll-out of the coronavirus vaccine, the studios are making up for 2020's "lost" year. LMGI members are back to work bringing our craft of visual storytelling to the screen. The past year brought home how connected we all are—no matter where we are based. We Zoomed across the country and around the world to share ideas, information and creative solutions to the challenges we were all facing. If, as it is said, "Knowledge is power," then our LMGI community is stronger than ever! This summer issue celebrates the creativity of our members. In our cover story, "Babylon Berlin's Gathering Storm," writer Nancy Mills takes us behind the scenes with LM David Pieper and KALM Mario Wittmann for the making of this timely, critically acclaimed, international series. Shaun O'Banion reveals how SLM/Co-producer William Doyle and his team brought director David Fincher's stunning vision of old Hollywood to life in "Passion and Persistence: Bringing Mank from Script to Screen." Attorney Bert Krages gives U.S.-based scouts some sage advice in "Know Your Rights." And fi nally, Paul Messana's "Next Generation" features Canadian KALM Meredith Hodder, a talented location scout on the rise. Our columns include "In My City" with Jim Collette giving us a tour of "The Old Pueblo"— Arizona's vibrant city of Tucson. Daniel Palerm gives us another fabulous view of magical Mallorca in our "Martini Shot." And "In the News" reports on the recent LMGI Board election results and the LMGI Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee's joint Zoom panel with the Red Nation Celebration Institute on "The Women of Power Below the Line." Until next time, Stevie Nelson, Paul Messana, Ken Haber, Diane Friedman FROM THE EDITORS' DESK "Innovation comes only from readily and seamlessly sharing information rather than hoarding it." –TOM PETERS
