www.postmagazine.com 2 POST MAR/APR 2021 EDITOR'S NOTE he 93rd Academy Awards take place far later this year — April 25 th — following an extended voting period. With theaters shut down for most of 2020, it was no surprise to see streaming platforms thrive, and that is reflected in this year's nominees, with Netflix alone garnering 35 nominations. Iain Blair takes a look at this year's nominees in our "Oscar Contenders" feature on page 14. David Fincher's Mank heads into Oscar night with a leading 10 nominations, including rec- ognition for Directing, Actor in a Leading Role (Gary Oldman), Actress in a Supporting Role (Amanda Seyfried), Cinematography, Directing, Music (Original Score) and Best Picture. Visit our Website for my interview with cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, who details his work on the film and how considerable pre-production testing led the team to choose a special Red Digital Cinema camera to shoot in black & white. The Trial of the Chicago 7 received six nominations, including one for Best Picture, though director Aaron Sorkin was overlooked for his effort. Iain weighs in on similar snubs, as well as the success of streaming platforms, so check it out. In a normal year, April would be the time production and post pros head to Las Vegas for the annual NAB Show, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted this year's convention (last year's was cancelled altogether), which will now take place in October. While there wasn't a swell of new camera technology to report on at press time, as there has been in years past, we did take some time to look at the state of the camera market, talking with manufactur- ers about their latest releases, as well as cinematographers about their kit selection for their most recent work. Check out our "Cameras & Lenses" feature on page 22 for a look at the latest solutions and applications, including news from Blackmagic Design, Canon, Red, Sony and a number of others. The past year has also pushed productions to adapt to smaller crews and remote post production. On page 26, our "Remote Workflows" feature highlights a range of tools that can help pros keep the creative process moving forward, whether it be editorial, grading or review. And of course, there's much more on our website — postmagazine.com — including my interview with Oscar-nominated editor Alan Baumgarten (The Trial of the Chicago 7) and Michelle Tesoro, who single handedly cut all seven episodes of the hugely popular Netflix series The Queen's Gambit. Post is also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, so check us out online for the latest news and updates.
