4 The Costume Designer Spring 2021 EDITOR'S NOTE We are now officially in Year Two of living with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we've settled in for the long haul. The entertainment industry—our industry—has played and continues to play a big role in helping people cope. Matt Miller, writing in Esquire in February, commented, "Since March of last year, much has been written about how we've used '90s movies, vintage TV shows, comfort culture to get a respite from the onslaught of terrible news." Quoting psychologists, he adds "'Nostalgia is a way of offering our- selves hope and inspiration.'" Of course, our current wave of nostalgia predates the pandemic. Global pop culture has been gazing backward for a while, as the many reboots and adaptations of the last few years demonstrate. The thing about gazing backward, of course, is that it provides us with a road map to move forward. Reexamining the past through the lens of the present helps us make sense of where we've been and where we are going. As the entertainment industry shifts (at least for now) from box-office releases to streaming ones, and reconsiders what it means to make content for a largely captive audience, it makes sense to reflect upon earlier eras in Hollywood. Mank, Wandavision and The Artist all recreate "the business" at different key points in its development, while telling stories that remain universal in their appeal. Love, fame, individual struggles—no matter the era, the human condition persists. The United States vs. Billie Holiday looks back to the tumultuous years leading up to the civil rights era, and highlights its heroine as a Black feminist icon. And Saved by the Bell and He's All That find ways to reimagine '90s pop culture classics for a new audi- ence, honoring the old while expressing the new. While we simultaneously look backward and forward, we have much to cel- ebrate right now. Ruth E. Carter graces our cover on the occasion of her momentous honor. Ann Roth inspires with a peek at her creative process. Georgina Curtis looks at past production practices and suggests ways that we can lead the way to better, greener work environments. We salute our nominees, and the beautiful and inspiring work they've done during this challenging year. We are proud of our members and their accomplishments, which elevate us all. Most importantly, we celebrate our membership and the art of costume design through our annual awards. The 23rd CDGA will take place on April 13, 2021, broad- cast live on Twitter. Although COVID protocols prevent us from meeting in person, there is much to celebrate about our first-ever virtual awards. We are able to expand our penultimate event beyond our own community, and connect globally with the public. This is a wonderful way to share our formidable talent with the world, lead- ing to greater recognition for our art, and the pay equity we deserve as artists. We can all revel in that!.
