Another of the larger locations was the nightclub where Jean and Teri go to suss out information about Cal's whereabouts in the city. I pulled from my own memories of dance clubs from the era, which were mostly in what had once been grand old spaces of theaters. My favorite location from day one was a Ukranian Social Club on the Southside Flats of Pittsburgh. The crew built two bars, painted the walls a deep dark red, highlighted all the metallic gold trim and added a super graphic. They made chrome and metallic elements to catch the light, and of course, hung the obligatory mirror balls. The script called for a dance club connected to a long hallway with phone booths leading to a back room. By piecing together a hallway set (built in the basement of the location) and adding entrance pieces to both the dance oor and a ceramic studio on another oor, we were able to visually connect the nightclub to the back room. A long and curvy red banquette was built to obscure an escape exit during the chaos of a shootout from all eyes but Jean's, but sadly the banquette didn't make the final cut. For the mayhem outside the nightclub, the city street was augmented with additional neon signage, dressing and period cars for a high wide shot as Jean makes her escape. She walks all night in the rain and seeks refuge in a laundromat where she finally breaks down and cries. It is the only time in the story that she receives any nurturing comfort from other women, so to support that expression of heart it was the one time the color pink was brought into the palette. A.
