She started painting and sewing at an early age, developing a love for color and textures. Her mother would regularly take her out of school to go to New York to visit art galleries, museums and to see Broadway plays, claiming that she never wanted school to interfere with Gae's education. After getting her degree in architecture from Cornell University, she moved to New York City to pursue her career, but a few years later, she was lured away from architecture by a music video production in the early days of MTV. On her first video, she worked as a PA two 24-hour days in a row. Looking through the lens of a Panavision camera, she realized that each frame was an opportunity for composition and it rocked her world. Fresh from the thrill of being on a set, she quit her job and started work full time for a small music video company where everyone did a bit of everything. She segued from music videos into working on commercials as a producer, while continuing to study drawing nights and weekends at The Brooklyn Academy of Art, and scenic painting at The Lester Polikoff School of Scenic Painting. In the end, it was no wonder she ended up in the Art Department. After working in New York City for several years, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dream of feature films, finding work as a Set Designer and as an Art Director for talented Production Designers on such films as Indecent Proposal, Angie, What Women Want, Tin Cup, Coyote Ugly, The Craft, Three Wishes, and the Emmy-winning miniseries Separate but Equal. In 2002, director Kevin Costner asked her to be the Production Designer on his Western drama, Open Range, where she had the privilege of building a frontier town in the wilds of Alberta. Since then, she's enjoyed working as a Production Designer on varied films such as Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Sisterhood Two, He's Just Not That Into You, The Book of Eli, License to Wed, A Walk in the Woods, Burn Your Maps, When We First Met, Breakthrough, An Actor Prepares, and most recently, three films with writer/director Julia Hart, Fast Color, Stargirl and I'm Your Woman.
