Working Nurse l WorkingNurse.com 11 February 22-March 29, 2021 ON THE QUICK Nursing & Healthcare News The Vaccine Confidence Gap Antivaxxers falsely claim a nurse died after COVID-19 vaccination! D espite delays and hiccups in the rollout, Americans' openness to COVID-19 vaccination appears to be growing. However, antivaxxers are resorting to extreme measures to create fear and doubt. Wait-and-See Attitudes In November and early December, Kaiser Health News polled American adults about whether they'd get an FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine if it was available to them for free. Thirty-four percent said they would do so as soon as they could, 15 percent said they definitely would not and 9 per- cent said they'd only get the vaccine if required to do so. A follow-up poll in mid-January found that 6 percent of respondents had already received at least one vaccine dose and 41 percent wanted to do so as soon as possible. The percentage who said they definitely wouldn't or would only do so if required had also fallen. However, almost a third of respondents still said they prefer to wait and see how well the vaccines work. This includes some healthcare workers and long-term care providers, wary of the vaccines' rapid development. "I totally trust the science," says Emory University School of Medicine Professor Kimberly Manning, M.D. "My thing is the timing." Antivaxxers Fan the Flames While some of the hesitation reflects on good-faith con- cerns, antivaxxers are taking every opportunity to paint the COVID-19 vaccines in a negative light — even inventing non- existent vaccination fatalities. Conspiracy theorists recently had a field day at the expense of Tennessee RN Tiffany Dover, a Chattanooga nurse manager who fainted in view of TV cameras following her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on December 17. Although Dover quickly recovered from her faint, caused by a chronic overactive vagal response, antivaxxers pointed to her collapse as evidence of the vaccine's supposed danger. Some social media posts even insist Dover died after being vaccinated, ignoring efforts by fact checkers to debunk these false claims.
