Creating
the Sound
of One
Night
in Miami
BY ANDY HAY MPSE
Produced by Keith and Jess
Calder of Snoot Entertainment,
and Jody Klein of Abkco, the story
is centered around the night of
February 25, 1964, as Cassius
Clay (later Muhammad Ali) wins
the world heavyweight boxing
championship, and goes on to
spend the evening with his three
friends, Malcolm X, Jim Brown,
and Sam Cooke, debating the
unique responsibilities they all
share with respect to the civil
rights movement. It is an incredibly
dynamic and powerful piece of
storytelling with a message that
resonates as deeply today as it
did some 60 years ago. The fi lm
was made independently and later
One Night in Miami—the result of many days and
nights of hard work under the focused and pas–
sionate direction of Regina King, one of my longtime
heroes in her feature directorial debut. A rare
opportunity for myself and my crew to collaborate
with one of the brightest stars of our time on a
fi lm with well-loved, larger-than-life characters,
fantastic writing, and tons of opportunities for great
sound and dynamics: from boxing fi ghts playing to
a huge crowd to the most intimate of conversations
between two men at a dining table, on-stage concert
performances, and a vintage Ferrari. What more
could a sound geek ask for?
