M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 33 a few films with Kay Rose, including Speed (1994), and Son of the Pink Panther (1993). In the last issue of Wavelength, daughter Vickie Sampson talked a bit about working with her mom. We are thrilled that Vickie has given the museum Kay's Sound Effects Library that she built over her amazing career … including more than 400 quarter-inch tapes, more than 200 digitized mag film units, and dozens of original DAT recordings. We also have the Moviola that Kay used on many of the films she was a part of. DAVID YEWDALL David Yewdall was a very dear friend, and a brilliant sound editor. He created and edited sounds on many films, including Battle Beyond the Stars (1980), Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), Moscow on the Hudson (1983), Once Upon a Forest (1993), for which he earned a MPSE Golden Reel Award, Jingle All the Way (1996), Starship Troopers (1997), Jackie Brown (1997), and Reindeer Games (2000) ... to name just a few. David was a frequent collaborator with director John Carpenter, and created sounds for Escape from New York (1981), Christine (1983), and what I would argue is his sound masterpiece—The Thing (1982). I had the pleasure of working with him on Predator 2 (1990), Dante's Peak (1997), and The Fifth Element (1997). David wrote the brilliant sound tutorial, The Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound, which was published in 1999 and had a fourth edition in 2012. He taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem during the 2000s. David passed away in 2017. His wife Lisa is my Chief Operating Officer at the museum, on our Board ... and has been HUGELY instrumental in our development. Lisa has entrusted David's sound library and much of his personal archives to our collection, and we hope to make some of his amazing sound library available through the museum. ALAN SPLET Alan Splet was a true artist. His collaborations with director David Lynch are exceptional, including Eraserhead (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984), and Blue Velvet (1986). I'm especially a fan of his work on Never Cry Wolf (1983). His sound design on The Black Stallion (1979) earned him a Special Achievement Oscar. He and his brilliant wife Ann Kroeber have been partners on many of these film soundtracks, which also include director Peter Weir's The Mosquito Coast (1986) and Dead Poets Society (1989). Alan passed away in 1994. His wife Ann is a dear friend … and I am honored that she has entrusted the original quarter- inch tape masters of their sound effects library to the museum for safekeeping. We're also very lucky to have a few artifacts from Alan and Ann's work, including their Studer quarter-inch tape deck and one of the original DAT recorders they used. These and other items will be on display at the museum when we are able to have an actual location to share them. BILL VARNEY Arguably the most impressive pieces in our collection—two Oscars—are from the collection of legendary Bill Varney. Bill worked in Hollywood as a re-recording mixer for more than 30 years on more than 80 films. He spent many years at the historic Goldwyn Studios in Hollywood (now known as "The Lot") as supervising re-recording mixer, and then at Universal Pictures as Vice President Alan Splet.
