10 • LMGI COMPASS | Winter 2021 "In the midst of a rapidly changing production environment, the LMGI has an important role to play in advocating for our craft and advancing our creative contribution to our industry," says Brooker. "For me, joining the Board is an exciting opportunity to work with, and serve, other location professionals around the world who are equally interested in promoting 'excellence on location,' and highlighting the creative contributions we make on projects each and every day. Thank you to everyone who gave me their vote of confi dence to serve." Ken's membership to our Board of Directors follows the departure of founding member, Trailblazer Award honoree and LMGI past president Lori Balton, who passionately served as co- editor of the LMGI Compass. Since producing the Guild's most-watched LMGI Awards, Balton taught a master class on location scouting for the San Francisco Film School, participated in a travel-centric Up in the Air podcast which features frequent fl yers, judged the FOCUS Movers & Shakers Awards and was a juror for the upcoming EUFCN Location Awards. Her accomplishments and accolades as the fi rst location professional accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and winner of multiple California On Location Awards (COLAs) will continue to shine a positive light upon our expanding location community and we graciously thank her for her many years of dedicated service. IN THE NEWS The newest member of the LMGI Board of Directors, Ken Brooker/LMGI, hails from Western Canada and is a location industry veteran with over 20 years of production experience on projects such as Noelle, Underworld: Evolution, Bates Motel, Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, Arctic Air, and most recently, Resident Alien. Brooker has been a member of the Directors Guild of Canada for 20 years and has served as an actively involved member of LMGI since 2016 with his mission focused on promoting and expanding the LMGI membership base in Canada. In 2019, he hosted an LMGI Fam Tour in Canada's Northwest Territories and most recently contributed to LMGI Compass (Spring 2020). LMGI members and partners are among the fi nalists for the fi rst annual "Makers & Shakers Awards." Brought to you by The Location Guide, makers magazine and FOCUS, the awards honor groundbreaking ideas and initiatives from players across the spectrum of the global creative screen industry. UK-based LMGI Board member Georgette Turner is a fi nalist in the "Shaker of the Year" category for her tireless philanthropic work on behalf of her location community. A week before the pandemic lockdown was called, Turner set up a GoFundMe page for UK crew to assist those who could not receive fi nancial aid. It was started for location personnel only—with the promise that if the fund hit 10k, it would open it to all departments. Turner asked fellow location managers Vinnie Jassal/LMGI and LMGI Makes Short List for Makers & Shakers Awards Georgette Turner/LMGI LMGI Board Welcomes Ken Brooker Ben Ahmed to help run the fund. Out of that grew "Fiver Friday"—the fi lm crew pool where everyone pays in £5 on a Friday. Twenty percent goes to the charity fund and 80 percent to the winner. The fund has so far given away £40,000 ($52,900 US). Turner also set up a COVID-19 cleaning course to train unemployed industry professionals to work at COVID testing centers. Turner also helped with the "Creative England" and the British Film Commission's "COVID Back to Work" protocols. Her location vendor company, Spotless H20, has designed and promoted many COVID assisting tools such as on- location virocidal foggers, socially distanced honey wagons, towable medical testing trailers and towable medical isolation cabins. The company has also sourced and provided PPE for productions at pre- pandemic prices. In the "Outstanding Creative Use of a Location" category, LM Daniel Lee/LMGI is shortlisted for his work on the 2020 LMGI Award- winning Best Contemporary Feature Film, The Last Black Man in San Francisco. LM Mary Barltrop/LMGI is also a fi nalist for her work on the 2020 LMGI Award-nominated Best Contemporary Feature Film Extraction. And LMGI business partner Panda Films is a fi nalist for their work on the TV commercial Island for Axe Pocket body spray. In the category of "Film Commission Initiative of the Year," the Honolulu Film Offi ce, a LMGI business partner, is a fi nalist for creating the "COVID Modifi ed
