Boes has received two Art Directors Guild Awards for Excellence in Production Design for his work on A Series of Unfortunate Events and Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, the latter of which also received an Oscar for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration. His other Production Design credits include The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and Planet of the Apes—also with Tim Burton—as well as Hulk, Alien: Resurrection, Scooby-Doo, Fantastic 4 and The Smurfs. Inspired by Ray Harryhausen, the creator of the stop- motion model animation known as "Dynamation," Boes turned his childhood love of building models and puppets and animating stop-motion animated films in the garage into his robust, decades-long career. He credits his background in animation with an increased awareness of how visuals can motivate story and how images can affect emotion, mood and thought. Born in Santa Cruz, California, Boes studied film and art at San Francisco State University. Before Boes got into film production, he worked as a staff toy designer for Galoob Toys in South San Francisco, one of the notable products were the successful "Micro Machines" line. In his downtime, he loves traveling the world, meeting different people and working in different cultures. M I C H A E L C A R L I N studied sculpture in Perth and Sydney and practiced as a fine artist before moving to London to pursue a career in film. He worked in various capacities on independent films such as The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Dust Devil and Backbeat, as well as designing music videos and commercials. Carlin's first film as Production Designer was David Evans' Fever Pitch, adapted by Nick Hornby from his own novel, starring Colin Firth. His Production Design credits since then include The Last King of Scotland, In Bruges and The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, for which Carlin received an Oscar nomination for Best Achievement in Art Direction. He later designed another of Knightley's films, Colette, and enjoyed three further collaborations with director Kevin Macdonald on The Eagle, Amazon Studios feature Oasis, and an upcoming adaptation of the Guantanamo Diaries, starring Tahar Rahim, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jodie Foster. In 2019, Michael designed Enola for director Harry Bradbeer and starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Caville and is currently preparing an adaptation of the hit play Oslo for HBO/Amblin. Other recent credits include Marjane Satrapi's Radioactive, starring Rosamund Pike as Marie Curie, Lasse Hallstrom's A Dog's Purpose and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, starring Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor, Dirt Music, directed by Gregor Jordan, Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist and The Two Faces of January for director Hossein Amini. He also worked with director Saul Dibb for the second time on The Suite Francaise. D A V I D C R A N K , born in Virginia, began drawing and making many things very early in life. His parents must have had a lot patience and storage room. He received a BA from the College of William & Mary in studio art and followed that with an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in Theatre Design. For ten years, he worked around the country at various regional theatres designing scenery and costumes, while rarely seeing his New York City apartment. After switching his focus to film, Crank continued the incessant travel, but returned to Virginia as his base. In 2004, he met Jack Fisk and began a fruitful, instructive, and incredibly fun six years, working as his Art Director on such projects as The New World, There Will Be Blood, The Tree of Life, Water for Elephants and finally, as co-designer with him on The Master. Other work has included John Adams with Gemma Jackson, for which he received an Emmy Award as her American Supervising Art Director. His Production Design credits include Knives Out, Greyhound, The Double, and the upcoming Paul Greengrass film News of the World. He has received several ADG Award nominations and two wins. Crank spends as much time as possible drawing and painting in his studio, located in an old elementary school in Richmond. Being there, he has come full circle, as he still enjoys a good nap time after lunch.
