4 The Costume Designer Fall 2020 EDITOR'S NOTE At the Costume Designers Guild, we have pivoted from the glam- our and glory of awards season to the horror of a global pandemic; from the worldwide blaze of unity which ignited the Black Lives Matter movement to the uncertainty preceding the recent election. Eleven months later, we crest the hill, counting a historic victory for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the first true moment of global ebullience since March. Crisis can have one of two results. It can break you down, or it can build you up. I am proud to report that within our community, both the immediate and far flung, we have accomplished the latter. This victory is because of you, dear members. On any other year, our calendar is crammed with FYC campaigns, shoots, a stream of endless promotions. With the absence of events and the impossibility to meet in person, we did not cease to commune. With the guidance of our stellar leadership, we found other ways to give each other support. President Salvador Perez, Executive Director Rachael Stanley, and Vice President Cate Adair worked tirelessly on the safety protocols to enable a return to work. Assistant Executive Director Brigitta Romanov caught the ball lobbed at her and ran with the IATSE Mask Initiative, with over 43,000 masks made to date. Our Executive Board has met with great frequency, spending even more time than is demanded on any regular year to ensure that our priorities mirror those of our members. Our committees, which organized on Zoom, helped establish the safety protocols with the IA. The Diversity Committee considered the challenges and representation of all members. The Website Committee worked on creating a new public face. The Pay Equity Committee is also gathering research and momentum. We supported each other when production stopped, and continued as it resumed. We applauded the art created in down- time by our members. We reveled in each other's projects and process through podcasts, interviews, social media, and personal conversations. We took calamity and fear and trans- formed them into purpose and hope. The word "last" is deceptively simple. But, it unfolds like an umbrella and encompasses one in the circumference of its shade. First. Last. Firsts are uncertain, their power matched by disbelief. Lasts are unknown, different. The last time I walked home from elementary school, it did not occur to me that I would rarely take that route again, and never by foot. My first magazine was created in one week. I didn't sleep. This magazine has grown exponentially since then to become a powerful representation of Costume Design. I am indebted to our Associate Editors Bonnie Nipar and Gary Foss, to our contributor Stacy Ellen Rich and all of our writers and collaborators. Most deeply, I pay tribute to you—your talent, your stories, and your excellence. In Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show, the surrender begins from the first frames of the film. In Remembrance of Things Past, Proust races to record his past in an almost religious act to preserve it. I think everyone can remember the last show shot without PPE—unmasked. And we look forward to the future, when we wear masks for the last time, the virus receding safely in the distance. But I would like to think of the word last with more dimension, not as an end, but as a door. It has been a joy to represent you through the pages of this magazine. With this, my last issue, I look forward to furthering the conversation as I continue to serve as your Communications Director.
