Banana Republic owned by Gap, Inc is on their way to achieving a more notable status within the eco-friendly community. In the summer of 2009, Banana Republic reintroduced the Heritage Collection for men and women with a stronger eco focus. The collection uses approximately 80 percent eco-friendly materials and is made from sustainable fibers that are chosen based on their impact on the environment, such as organic cotton, bamboo and soy-silk. However the collection is still very true to the safari inspired aesthetic that Banana Republic is originally known for. Furthermore, all of Gap Inc.'s denim must adhere to their "Denim Clean Water Program", meaning that they require all of their manufacturers to return the water back to the local community in which they took it from, specially treated to ensure that it is safe and clean. Their commitment to the environment doesn't stop there. This major fashion company continues to improve their eco impact through recycled packing and more sustainable stores. Currently, their everyday shopping bags contain 15 percent recycled material and are also recyclable. Sale shopping bags go a step further and are 20 percent recycled materials. Going above and beyond, their shoeboxes contain 50 percent recycled material and their gift boxes are made with 35 percent recycled materials and are both…and, you guessed it, both are recyclable. Within the stores Gap is using energy-efficient methods and also materials that are recycled, like restroom tiles and wood flooring made with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood from sustainable forests.
