4 The Costume Designer Summer 2020 EDITOR'S NOTE 2020 has been a year like no other. Eclipsed by the cumulative toll of the pandemic, our way of life has been upended. Ignited by police violence, protests have flowed from our hearts into the streets and have not ceased. The year has witnessed a stag- gering death count, a dystopian social climate, and a version of solitary confinement as the new normal. It is almost unimaginable that we are at the end of summer, but it is in this tumultuous landscape that we find ourselves at the Emmy Issue. Some say this is not the time for awards. While I understand the sentiment, I would counter that no one is actually celebrating. Rather, I would say we are recog- nizing. In this moment of crisis, chaos, and despair, television has become an instrumental source of respite, distraction, and hope. With theaters empty, never before has it wielded such a powerful voice. The CDG's purpose has always been to uplift, unify, and protect its mem- bership. Even when the external discourse is dire, this dialogue must con- tinue. In this context, we feel the opportunity to honor the efforts of those recognized for excellence is necessary to pave the road forward. This disaster has also served to reinforce the bonds of our shared objec- tives. We have come together as the beautiful, varied, and multicultural orga- nization we are. This magazine features our past, present, and future. In The Original, we share the story of Adella Farmar, who at 93 is one of the first Black Costume Designers in television. Her grace and fortitude made her a mentor to many. In The Trailblazers, we speak with legends Francine Jamison- Tanchuck, Michelle Cole, Sharen Davis, and Ruth E. Carter about contending with race in Hollywood, and triumphing. Finally, The Vanguard spotlights a fascinating range of creative personalities within our union. I was captivated by the scintillating breadth of their experience. There is no singular path to Costume Design. Each individual is a distinct tesserae in the mosaic that is our community, united in the passion for their art and support for each other. This is the definition of solidarity.
