O Z A R K S E A S O N T H R E E | P E R S P E C T I V E 6 3 he etix series Ozark is a saga about a successful financial planner, arty yrde, who is forced to leave his practice in hicago to launder huge sums of exican drug money in issouri's ake of the Oarks in order to save the lives of he and his family. ason ateman inhabits the role of arty yrde, directs multiple episodes and is the executive producer of the series. I was a big fan of his work in front of and behind the camera and had met with him on another project that he was directing and producing. I did not get the oer but was told via my agent that he hoped to work with me in the future. I've heard that before hank you, but no thank you. ays later, Ozark scripts arrived in my inbox and I nibbled at the bait. Coming in as the third designer on the third season of a streaming episodic show, however popular, was not what my ego had in mind as the next appendage to my body of work. I had never designed this type of a series with multiple directors and writers and would have to learn the dynamics of the dierent roles and also the crossover of the shooting company's schedule and that of another team prepping for another block or episode. evertheless, I began the vetting process. here were multiple conversations with producers and the production manager about scheduling and budgeting. he amortied budget vs. episode budgets. ould I have the ability to hire a crew from my own list of potential candidates or would I be obliged to hire the crew from previous seasons ll of these points still had me on the fence, but the final meeting and dialogue with ason about the new season's design opportunities and his desire to expand the palette and look of the show set the hook. e discussed the challenges of designing and branding the issouri elle asino and creating the world of the character Omar avarro, the leader of a exican drug cartel, both of which would be a bold contrast to anything previously established in the Ozark series. e reeled me in, and I was onboard. here were numerous other new setsmany of which were the setting for some character's unfortunate Ozark demise.
