Dominguez Hills campus. The university theater building is a concrete windowless monolith that aligned with my idea of rutalist architecture and was a perfect exterior for the large interior headquarters set the production decided to build. The company was based at Raleigh Studios, and those massive soundstages were perfect for our needs. The absence of windows in the headquarters allowed me to use as much space as possible on the soundstage, and not lose oorspace to backdrops and green screens. I used skylights almost everywhere as light sources, making light a primary design element on the sets and casting shadows across the walls and oors. The soundstage was 41-feet high and every inch on it was used, as the ga er ooper onaldson and director of photography Simon Chapman had to simulate sunlight fi ltering through the skylights. I created the texture of shadows to enrich the environment that at times was purposely left bare. The CSU campus was great for all the other buildings that surrounded the theater as well, a collection of old and new architecture from mid-century to rutalism, modernism and contemporary structures. The campus became the exterior Space Force base, and the geography of the buildings was used to create points of reference for the audience. Most of the interiors were built on stage, and Space Force signage and ags were added everywhere possible to tie all of the exteriors together. Extensive Art Department research helped me create both interiors and exterior sets that would resemble a military base as much as possible. Our research included in- person tours on military bases, online research, videos, books and archives, but one of the most e ective resources were the consultants that et ix provided from the military and .
