34 • THEARTISAN SUMMER 2020 Xi'an and Qin are brother and sister Twi'leks, played by Ismael Cordova and Natalia Tena Burg (Clancy Brown, center) Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) Tena, and Burg the "deviled" Devaronian played by Clancy Brown. Because of the action, we also had stunt doubles for Xi'an and Burg. Besides these main prosthetic players and a handful of BG roles, we had the human lead characters of Bill Burr's Mayfeld and James Boone's Ran Malk. AD: The episode was exciting for us, and these were super- cool characters to create. L.E. made the Lekku, which are the Twi'lek head tails. They were pre-painted, and we had to match the make-up colors based on the produc- tion designs. I played around with several different body make-up and paint schemes. I came up with a mix of the Make Up Forever body paint and ProAiir airbrush make- up, which I like for their durability and suppleness. It is also something that I was able to thin down and put into a bottle for light airbrush touch-ups as needed throughout the day. This character also had brow covers and a really fun beauty element to it as well. BS: The designs for Qin showed him with large, thick Lekku head tails and protruding forehead lobes with scars adorning his features. L.E. created the Lekku and the facial prosthetics. The head tails were fabricated out of foam latex and were secured to a dense urethane under-skull/ filler. We would first bald cap the actor and then adhere the filler skull with Skin Tite. The silicone face prosthetic would cover the upper half of his face to the top of his nose and cheekbone area and overlap onto the filler skull. Legacy also made a leather crown headpiece that covered the attachment point of the Lekku, and the top edge of the prosthetics. We used the Lekku paint scheme to determine the path for the actor's make-up tones. Alexei had done the R&D of several different make-up products, so we followed his road map, with alterations in the colors to make the broth- er and sister slightly different. The costume design for Qin also kept us on our toes because his tank top exposed his full arms and shoulders. Carlton Coleman and I worked out our steps during the make-up test, and we both applied it during most of the episode. Sabrina Castro would fill in for Carlton per scheduling of multiple characters in this episode. Burg the Devaronian is an updated redeux to one of the iconic characters from the original Cantina scene from A New Hope. Glen Hanz sculpted this make-up for L.E. This make-up broke down to seven silicone prosthetics and five prosthetic transfers, and there was a fiberglass under-skull with magnetic attachment points that allowed the horns to come on and off for comfort. The silicone prosthetics were tinted so that minimal washes of colors could tie the look together, and per some previous Volume Lighting tests that Scott Stoddard did, they were quickly able to find the proper scheme. Scott and Mike Ornelaz applied this make- up throughout the episode, and Carlton Coleman and Samantha Ward would apply the same make-up for Justin the Stunt Devaronian. Episode 7: Greef Karga and Moff Gideon BS: What a joy for Carl Weathers as Greef Karga and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon to grace our make-up and hair trailer. Both men are incredibly professional and wonderful to work with. MS: Wendy Southard took care of these gentlemen in the trailer and on set, grooming them and using a combination of airbrush color and Toppik to keep their looks matte and cancel any reflections as they both had very short hair. Episode 8: The big reveal BS: In the story, the Mandalorian's helmet is removed, revealing Pedro's face, beat up from an explosion. I worked with the 2nd AD, and we found a photo double for Pedro so we could work up a version of the direction we would go in, using a couple of prosthetic transfer cuts, tiny gashes,
