LMGI COMPASS | Summer 2020 • 27 MUSTŽSEE PLACE: The Louvre Museum which is as spec- tacular inside as it is outside and which can be the sole reason for a trip to Pa- ris. There are exceptional collections from many civilizations from antiquity until 1830. FAVORITE SHOP: The Galieries Lafayette Paris Haussmann for its spectacular art nouveau steel and glass dome and its roof terrace with a view on the Opéra House. FAVORITE RESTAURANT: There are so many good restaurants in Paris. But if I have to give one name, then I would say the restaurant Hugo. It is a small restaurant which offers quality French cuisine at a very reasonable price. PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT: The Eiffel Tower, especially when it sparkles, which happens during the first five minutes of every hour. Even for me, the magic still works when I see it. BEST DAY TRIP: Do a walking tour through different districts of Paris and its surroundings. Start the day at Les Puces de Saint- Ouen. Located at the edge of Paris and covering seven hectares, it is generally thought to be the biggest antique market in the world. There you can find vintage and antique treasures, as well as incense sticks and African fabric. Then go to the Latin Quarter and walk down Rue Mouffetard during the opening hours of the food market and have lunch in one of the many restaurants. Then get lost in the alleys of the Père Lachaise Cemetery in search of the graves of Chopin, Georges Méliès, Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf or Oscar Wilde. A short break on Ile Saint-Louis to taste an ice cream at Berthillon's, then follow the Seine riverbank to go to Trocadéro, which faces the Eiffel Tower, and wait until nightfall to see the tower adorned with its golden covering. FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD: Montmartre with its steep, cobbled streets is one of the most historic, vi- brant and interesting neighborhoods in Paris. Home to the Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur, cafes, street artists and nightclub district (home of the Moulin Rouge), it retains its village ambiance despite the daily crowds of tourists. You can then follow the crowded streets Aerial car park Arnaud's Private Tour from Pigalle to more confined streets and steep stairs that lead to Vignes du Clos Montmartre; an unusual vineyard. FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST: The photographer and street artist JR. A former graffiti artist, he is known for guerrilla posting his large black-and- white photographic images in public locations. You can view some of his amazing work at http://www.jr-art .net/ BEST BAR/CLUB: La Recyclerie, a restaurant/café located inside an old disused train station. It also offers a cultural program focused on the principle of recovery and recycling based on the concepts of "living better" and "consuming better." The place has been decorated with recovered furniture and decorative items and offers various events like DIY workshops, exhibitions, relaxation sessions, tattoo workshops with henna and second-hand trade. BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC: La Bellevilloise with its varied and rich program. There is also a jazz brunch every Sunday. With its club and cafe, La Bellevilloise is one of the main independent venues in Paris for concerts, shows, exhibitions, screenings and fashion shows. BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW: My best vantage point is on the top of an aerial car park in the ninth arrondissement. It offers a wonderful view of the rooftops of Paris. La Recyclerie
