Meet Some of the Producers At the 5th Annual FWC event, held in San Diego in early March, THE TASTING PANEL spotted several wines and wine producers of note. POMAR JUNCTION PAT PAULSEN WINERY We've already predicted that Paso Robles winery Pomar Junction is the future of this region. Growers and wine producers, their estate produces some of the inest fruit we've tasted. The newly released Pomar Junction 2012 Rosé of Syrah ($18) offers up peach pit and watermelon aromatics with a palate of apple pomegranate and beechwood tannins heading towards a ine dry, salty inish. When Monty Paulsen left his stints at DeLoach and Rosenblum Winery, he went back to his roots. His father, the late Pat Paulsen, was a revered comedian in the '60s and '70s, with regular appearances on The Smothers Brothers television show. "When dad started planting in the mid 1970s, he was one of the irst celebrity winemakers," Paulsen tells THE TASTING PANEL. "I was 17 when we sold the winery, but we kept the name and the brand." Pat Paulsen Winery 2009 "Odyssey" North Coast ($26) is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Zinfandel that takes cherry and vioMonty Paulsen is the son of lets and creates a new comedian and winegrower species: unforgettable. Pat Paulsen. Jim Shumate is the Winemaker for Pomar Junction in Paso Robles. CLAVO CELLARS J. RICKARDS WINERY Former cattle rancher Jim Rickards is also a longtime grape grower, with 45 acres planted in the Alexander Valley. The vineyards have been planted over the past 30 years, augmenting the original 1908 Zinfandel vines. What we loved about the J. Rickards 2010 Old Vine Zinfandel ($25) was the black fruit ripeness—mmmm!—but the ginger latte inish was even yummier. Neil Roberts of Clavo and John Gleason, his partner on a new Rhône varieties label, II Moon. Paso Robles producer Neil Roberts wowed us with his Clavo 2010 Viognier from Paso Robles. Fragrant and clean, it whispers white lowers and lime blossom. Roberts is one of the premier viticulturists in California, growing grapes for some of the region's inest vineyards under the banner of Roberts Vineyard Services. 144 / the tasting panel / may 2013
