M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S I 13 Every reel starts with an ACADEMY LEADER. It's the only source of sync for the hundreds of tracks that will be built on every project. ACADEMY LEADER is an eight-second countdown with the 2-POP at six seconds. The 2-POP is one frame with a 1k tone. It's the single source of sync for ALL elements. The first frame of the ACADEMY LEADER says PICTURE START. It is the top of the eighth second. Each number that you see with the hand sweeping around the clock is worth one second. When it counts down to the number two, it will only show one frame. After that is two seconds of black leader to your first frame of picture. That is the first frame of every reel, whether it starts with an image or a fade-in from black. ACADEMY LEADER is required on every REEL on the zero frame of the hour. 01:00:00:00 is the PICTURE START. 01:00:06:00 is the 2-POP. 01:00:08:00 is the FIRST FRAME OF PICTURE. TAIL LEADER verifies that the REEL has ended in sync. The TAIL LEADER is two seconds past the last frame of picture, whether it's an image or a fade-to-black. In our next issue, we will discuss everything about CUEING Foley footsteps and props.
