LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2020 • 25 MUSTŒSEE PLACE: Native American dances at the Pue- blos, especially over the holidays. Sundown Procession and bonfire at Taos; the Turtle dances at Ohkay Owingeh. They are beautiful, moving and take you back in time. FAVORITE SHOP: A nondescript doorway, about a block from the Santa Fe Plaza leads you up a set of stairs to Allã, one of the nation's few Spanish-language bookstores. The weathered wood shelves are filled with Latin American literature, as well as fiction and nonfiction about the American Southwest. A close second is Shiprock; they have the most exceptional collection of Navajo rugs and blankets. FAVORITE RESTAURANT: About five miles out of town is San Marcos Feed. It's close to many of the Western sets, so a close convenient option when working. In the front is a quaint cozy café serving an excellent breakfast or lunch. In the back is the feed store with farming and ranch supplies. PLACE TO SEE BY NIGHT: The lights on the Santa Fe Plaza over the holidays. The fire barrels burning along Canyon Road on Christmas Eve. Any ranch on a moonless light, every star is accounted for. BEST DAY TRIP: Head up into Georgia O'Keeffe country. Make a reservation in advance to see her home in Abiquiu. This is possibly my favorite structure in New Mexico. Stop by Bode's General Store for lunch. Veggie burger or ammo, this place has everything. Ten miles down the road is Ghost Ranch—these breathtaking landscapes were a key element of O'Keeffe's work. From there, head to Ojo Caliente Spa. Arrive at sunset, soak into the night in one of the hot mineral pools. Scottish Rite Temple Clay's Private Tour FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD: Historic East Side, at the base of the mountains with an elevated view of the town. A quick walk to the Santa Fe Plaza by walking along the river that cuts through town. FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST: My favorite gallery is the Owings Gal- lery. It is home to many paintings by the Taos Society of Artists: Sharp, Couse, Berninghaus, Dunton, Blu- menschein. Santa Fe is also home to well-known contemporary artists such as Bruce Nauman, Susan Rothenberg, Terry Allen and James Drake. BEST BAR/CLUB: Tiny's Restaurant & Lounge, an old-school hard-drinking no-frills watering hole. When I decide to clean up before drinking, I like the old world vibe of the bar at La Posada, as well at the tiny bar at the Compound Restaurant. BEST PLACE TO HEAR MUSIC: Meow Wolf (Game of Thrones author and Santa Fe resident George R.R. Martin financed this interactive art space). The open-air Santa Fe Opera is also a great concert venue. BEST VANTAGE POINT/SCENIC VIEW: The overlook at White Rock Park. Perched along a cliff, it overlooks the Rio Grande River as it lumbers toward Mexico and the Gulf. Santa Fe Plaza
