IN MY CITY: SANTA FE
huge help. It allowed me the confi dence to shoot less
while still delivering angles and coverage the location
manager could present to the production designer. I
ended up becoming an ALM on that show. I was fortunate
to carry on working in features right after that fi rst show.
My fi rst trip to set was thrilling. That excitement still
carries through today.
Stevie: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE PRIMARY DRAW FOR FILMING
IN & AROUND SANTA FE & SURROUNDING AREAS IN GENERAL?
WHAT KIND OF "LOOKS" ARE THERE? WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL
FAVORITES & WHY?
CP:
First and foremost, the crews. I have watched the
depth and experience of our crews grow over the last 15
years. We can facilitate multiple productions at once,
each with exceptional fi lm technicians.
The diverse landscapes around Santa Fe are a huge
draw. You will fi nd a multitude of looks all within a
friendly 30-mile zone from your production offi ce. Lush
aspen groves and pine forests in the high mountains
meet barren desert landscapes with cactus and scrubby
trees in the plains. You can fi lm a scene in the snow in
the morning, and a horse making its way across a dusty
landscape in the afternoon. The sky. Visiting crew
members often comment on the vast enormity of New
Mexican skies.
Our Western towns are a huge draw for production as
well. Nowhere else will you fi nd this many Western sets
in such close proximity: Bonanza Creek, Eaves, Ford
and San Cristobal ranches all have fantastic towns.
The Cowboys, Silverado, Lonesome Dove, Young Guns,
All the Pretty Horses, The Missing, 3:10 to Yuma, True
Grit (2010), Godless and Hostiles are just a handful
of the movies that have been fi lmed here. Santa Fe is
also home to the decommissioned state penitentiary.
The Longest Yard (2015), The Book of Eli and Messiah
have all taken advantage of this terrifi c location.
Most companies that fi lm here base in Santa Fe and fi lm
on the amazing lands around it … there is not a lot of
fi lming in the city proper. It happens but nothing like just
outside of it. Depending where you are staying in town,
you can be at the movie ranches or the penitentiary
in 10 to 15 minutes, so they really feel like they are a
part of Santa Fe, not something that is removed an hour
away.
